LATERLIFE SPOTLIGHT NEWSLETTER
Each month this newsletter turns the spotlight on one area of the site and this month we're looking at the Family and Home. The newsletter will describe and guide you around the different pages, so that you can dip into any areas that interest you right now, or simply be aware of what is available for the future. These spotlight newsletters mirror our programme of site improvement so that you can view the latest information and facilities available on the topic. We hope you will find this new initiative useful and that it will also encourage you to provide your feedback on additional things you would like to see us cover within each topic area. SPOTLIGHT ON FAMILY AND HOME
So our Family and Home section will give you information on how to get the most from these key elements of retirement. Start by looking at the Overview page to show you what is in the Section and to get links to one or two other general sites on the topic. Amongst these are sites such as Family Onwards, which has some good advice whatever our family circumstances. Maybe you’re interested in the various issues that can arise in our relationships during later life. Our personal relationships become vital to us during this stage of our lives because we have no work through which to form other relationships. So have a look at our Relationships page, which in turn will lead you to our series of detailed articles by our Relationship Counsellor, Maggi Stamp. Of course, both our children and grandchildren are very important to us in later life. The relationship with our own children will probably change as we get older, because they will be grown up, independent (maybe!) and perhaps with families of their own. However, they will probably need help getting to that stage, so have a look at our page on advising your kids. It concentrates on higher education and getting a job as well as having links to other useful sections. Grandchildren are a source of constant delight – not least because we can usually hand them back when we want to! Our page on Grandchildren looks at books, gifts, parties for little ones and a whole host of other topics so that you can get the most out of being a grandparent. One of the issues that is very often present in our own later life is that of caring for elderly parents or other relatives. If you’re in that situation, our section on Elderly Care will be very helpful for you. It will help you to find the best care home for your parent or relation and how to plan for care home fees, which are often a huge problem for people. The section also looks at various living aids that can make life easier, particularly for those elderly people who stay in their own homes and there’s a page on ideas to make the home safer and more secure for elderly people. Finally, there’s a link to our Guide to Caring for Elderly Parents, which contains lots more information on this topic. Unfortunately, there is sometimes a decline in our relationships that can lead to divorce. If this should be the situation, take a look at the section on divorce, which also includes pages on re-marriage and making a success of stepfamilies. An important part of the home for many people is the garden. Our Gardening section is written by Rosemary Martin and contains all the hints and tips that you need to make a success of your garden. Each month, in her Gardener's Diary, Rosemary looks at the jobs you should be doing in order to ensure that your garden looks a picture. There is lots of other information, too, so do have a look at it. There’s also a page that explains the Home and Garden Handyman Service, which you might find helpful and also a page on pets. Many people find great comfort in a pet of some sort in their later life. Finally, if you think that, in retirement, your home might be abroad, you’ll find our Guide to Moving Abroad very useful. It takes you through making the decision, doing your research and the financial aspects. It also gives you some tips that will make the whole process easier and more successful. We hope that you find the section useful and that there is something in it for you. If you would like to tell us what you think and how we can improve it, let us know by emailing us at feedback@laterlife.com.
