www.businesslink.gov.uk is the website of Business Link, the national business advice service. This is one of the best places to start with everything you need for starting your own business. Through it you can locate your own local Business Link and a wide range of business support organisations. Business Links run many free introductory events designed to help you succeed.

Companies House - useful if you want to check on existing registered company names, trademarks etc. via the site search facility.

FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) - well worth becoming a member for the benefits you get free with membership, plus networking, and a variety of services.

Inventors Club Are you an inventor with an idea you want to bring to market, then you may find some help by joining one of the inventors clubs around the country. Terry Jennings and Brenda Reay started the East London Inventor's Club in their later life and received one of our Laterlife Challenge 2006 awards. Prime Initiative A national organisation, which is a charity linked to Age Concern, dedicated to helping people over 50 set up in business. They state that "We are a not-for-profit company whose aim is to release the untapped potential of 50+ enterprise. While this may not be the route for all, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity for self-fulfilment and independence that working for oneself can provide".

InBIz exists to stimulate, promote, develop and support individual and group enterprise and initiative amongst all sectors of the community. InBiz was established in 1990 to provide support to the long term unemployed, benefit dependent individuals wishing to move into self employment. 

Fredericks Foundation provides support to individuals who wish to start-up their own business and become self-employed. They aim to help people who often have nowhere to turn when trying to help themselves, or who are perhaps recovering from distressing personal situations.

NatWest logoNatWest Small Businesses section, with information bound to be of help to anyone thinking of starting their own business. This is a very good site with plenty of information easily accessible - you could do a lot worse than look here.

Enterprise Gateways If you are in the South East of England these gateways are planned to help entrepreneurs and new businesses in their development and growth. Including workspace, training, finance and mentoring.

Starting a Business HSBC groups Starting a Business page. This is also a very comprehensive site presented in a professional style.

Inland Revenue Information on tax for Businesses. You are encouraged to register with the Inland Revenue early when starting a new business.

UK Department of Trade and Industry DTI aims to promote enterprise, innovation and increased productivity - in particular by encouraging successful business start-ups. If you select the business section you will find details of the initiatives that the DTI and other parts of UK Government currently operate.

Business Capital Venture Association The BVCA is the industry body for the UK private equity and venture capital industry. The membership of over 360 members, represents the overwhelming number of UK-based private equity and venture capital firms and their advisers. Web site has a useful search facility to match your investment funding needs with potential investors.
