Pets are great for all the family
young or old. As we get older they can be a great source of companionship
and comfort but we must be sure that we are willing able to give them the
good care that they need. If we lead a hectic life, take frequent holidays
and are regularly away, think carefully before you commit yourself to a pet.
If you do feel that you can give a pet the care it deserves, then consider
what you want the pet for. If it's for friendship and companionship, then a
dog is probably the best thing for you. A dog also provides an excellent
reason to get out there in the fresh air for a good walk - so it can help
you keep fit! It will probably also help you to meet new
people; dog owners talk to complete strangers in situations in which you
would never dream of striking up a conversation without both of you having a
dog. Cats, too, are obviously very popular. They also
provide friendship (although not so much loyalty!) and are slightly less
onerous to look after. On the other hand, it's very rare to
take a cat for a walk! There are many other animals
that make super pets: rabbits, fish, hampsters and many many more. Remember,
too, that if you don't want to keep a pet yourself, you could
do puppy walking/training for Guide Dogs for the Blind or you could become a
dog walker for friends and neighbours.
